Liver Cancer

The most common form of liver cancer is called hepatocellular carcinoma because it comes from hepatocytes, the main type of liver cell. Over 75% of all liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma. Most liver cancer cells grow in the following three growth patterns:

1. Liver cancer begins as a single tumor and grows by expanding. Only in later stages does it spread to other parts of the liver.

2. Liver cancer spreads tentacle-like growths through the liver almost from the beginning and is not confined to a single tumor. This pattern is common with liver cirrhosis and is the most common growth pattern in United States.

3. Liver cancer develops as nodules in several parts of the liver.

Other types of liver cancer include: cholangiocarcinoma, angiosarcomas, hemangiosarcomas, and hepatoblastomas.

When someone is diagnosed with liver cancer, the doctor refers to spread of the cancer as staging. The stage of the liver cancer will effect the treatment options available. In the early stages, if the liver is still healthy, the doctors refer to the liver cancer as being “localized resectable” which means being able to be removed by surgery. When the liver cancer can not be removed by surgery, it is call “unresectable.” When the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, the liver cancer is classified as advanced.

Unfortunately, in most cases, liver cancer is not diagnosed until the cancer is in its advanced stages and the overall survival rate of liver cancer* is only 10%. Individuals with advanced stages of liver cancer receive end-of-life, medical and psychosocial care given to patients with a terminal illness. The financial cost for end-of-life care is expensive and most insurance companies do not cover all treatments.
